One horse was killed when it drank water from a trough rigged with an exposed electrical line, another was electrocuted by horse hit man Tommy Burns, and a third had its leg broken with a crowbar, authorities said.

The investigation, which started as a probe into the disappearance of candy heiress Helen Vorhees Brach, branched out into the horse business when authorities began delving into the background of stable owner Richard Bailey, a close friend of Brach's. Tipped to Burns' sideline as a horse killer, authorities looked on as he and an associate struck a horse with a crowbar in Florida. Caught red-handed, Burns cooperated and implicated owners and trainers in 15 horse killings.

Top Equestrian Is Convicted In Horse Insurance Scheme

A prominent equestrian who is the son of one of the richest men in America, was convicted of three counts of wire fraud today in the climax of a four-year Federal investigation into horse killing and insurance fraud.

George Lindemann Jr., 31, faces a mandatory prison term, which prosecutors said could be between 15 months and 15 years, and a maximum $3 million fine for ordering the 1990 killing of a show horse, Charisma, to collect $250,000 in insurance money.

A co-defendant, Marion Hulick, was convicted of the same charges. Mrs. Hulick, 60, was the trainer and manager at the Lindemann family's horse farm near Greenwich, Conn.

Mr. Lindemann, the son of George Lindemann, who made a fortune in the cellular-phone business, winced as the guilty verdicts were read. Sentencing was set for Dec. 18. The defendants left the courthouse without talking to reporters. Defense lawyers said they would appeal.

For the younger Mr. Lindemann, a rider who has been highly ranked nationally and internationally and who aspired to the United States Olympic team, the conviction almost certainly means he will not be able to compete in Atlanta next summer. He continued to compete since his indictment last year, and during the trial he expressed optimism he could qualify for the team.

Lloyds cuts 200 jobs at insurance arm

Lloyds Banking Group is cutting 200 jobs at its general insurance arm, bringing the bank's total lay-offs this year to 7,500.

The Unite union sharply criticised Lloyds's "confused management style".
Only last week the bank stunned staff when it backtracked on its decision to close Cheltenham & Gloucester branches. The sudden U-turn will save 900 jobs, according to the union. The closure of the 164-strong network was first announced in June.

Lloyds announcedtoday that it was merging the support functions of the Lloyds TSB and HBOS general insurance division including sales, marketing, actuarial and underwriting operations. Up to 115 jobs could be cut in West Yorkshire, and up to 50 could go in Newport, south Wales, the bank said.

Unite's national officer, Rob MacGregor, said: "We have no confidence in this bank's confused strategy. Only last week Lloyds decided to abandon the closure of the Cheltenham & Gloucester branch network, bringing a reprieve for 900 staff. This week it is cutting over 200 jobs.
"This steady stream of announcements and cuts is soul-destroying for the workforce at this state-owned bank – it must end. Staff are expected to give the customers the best possible service but don't know if they have a job from week to week. These cuts are not in the interests of the customers, or the taxpayers who own this bank. The government needs to be more hands on and put an end to poor management at the bank."

Lloyds defended its decision and said compulsory redundancies would be a last resort. Phil Loney, managing director of general insurance, said: "We are bringing together these essential support functions in order to help meet the needs of our customers and the general insurance division.

"We recognise that this is difficult news for our affected colleagues. We are committed to working through these changes with our colleagues carefully and sensitively, and will seek to use natural turnover and redeployment wherever possible."

The bank said it had consulted the unions Accord, LTU and Unite and would continue to consult them throughout the process. The 200 full-time jobs will go by the end of late January 2010 at a number of locations, including south Wales and West Yorkshire. All affected staff have been briefed by their line manager today.

JOUSTING is a dangerous sport and one that probably needs insurance more than most. But, Australian jousters are out of luck when it comes to protecting themselves and the public financially.

Novice jouster Ben Poole, who took up the sport just over a year ago because he wanted something more exciting to do with horses, is no longer able to continue in the unusual sport as the Australian Equine Alliance (AEA), which used to insure jousting - and just about everything you can do on horses - folded in December last year.

Mr Poole was invited to attend a jousting competition in New Zealand after coming forth in a recent Medieval Fair at Musgrave Park in Brisbane. Now he won't be able to attend without insurance.

“It's a shame - I couldn't get insurance,” he said.
He said there was too much liability, and insurance was needed before he could continue the sport, which he hopes will be in the near future.
“Because (of the lack of insurance) the jousting community is breaking apart,” he said.
“Even training alone, no one wants to take the risk of damage.
“It's a dangerous sport even though there is armour.”

Professional jouster and Full Tilt business co-owner Michele Walker said the AEA folded as Equine Influenza meant less people renewed their policies and the economic downturn left it impossible to keep running.

She said it was very hard to get insurance for jousting, unless you ran your own business as there was so much involved with putting together a proposal to an insurance company.
She and her husband, who holds world titles in jousting, were responsible for getting the sport onto AEA's policy in the first instance and said they had been appealing to other companies in Australia to insure it over the last six months without luck.
